What car insurance covers in Greece, plan by plan

Third-party liability (αστική ευθύνη) is the compulsory cover that pays other people for injury and damage your car causes: at least €1,300,000 per victim and €1,300,000 per accident on every Greek-plated car, the minimum set by the Bank of Greece. Since 1 June 2025 the car itself must also be insured against forest fire and flood (ΦΕΚ Α' 198/2024). Every other cover is optional.

Car insurance price

Car insurance prices: what sets yours

Your premium comes from the insurer's tariff: the drivers, the car, where it is parked and the covers you choose. The quote is free, shows the price for your car and commits you to nothing.

  • 12-month policy, paid in full
  • Quote with plate and postcode

  • Driver age

    How it moves your price
Drivers under 25 pay a surcharge; declare every one of them
  • Years licensed

    How it moves your price
Under 2 years: a surcharge, and own damage is not available
  • Postcode

    How it moves your price
Where the car is usually parked
  • The car

    How it moves your price
Age, market value and engine; the own-damage excess is usually about 1% of the car's value
  • Covers and excess

    How it moves your price
Each plan adds covers; a higher excess lowers the own-damage premium
  • Claims history

    How it moves your price
A claims-free record with another insurer, including abroad, is taken into account in your quote; bring that insurer's claims-history letter

Premiums include Greek insurance premium tax.

Exclusions

What car insurance does not pay

  • A driver without a licence valid in Greece, including an expired one
  • A car without a valid ΚΤΕΟ certificate
  • Damage from before the policy started
  • A young or new driver you did not declare: third parties are paid only after a 60% penalty, your own car at 50%
  • Intent, alcohol or drugs; the insurer pays third parties, then recovers the money from the driver
  • Property damage between family members
  • Mechanical breakdown under own damage
  • Theft through negligence
  • Glass cover excludes lights, indicators, mirrors, window mechanisms and plastic windows

Example repair

€2,500

You · €400Insurer · €2,100

The excess is the part of each claim you pay yourself. An own-damage repair of €2,500 with a €400 excess: you pay €400, the insurer pays €2,100. Payouts stop at the car's market value; it is a total loss when what is left is worth under 30% of its pre-accident value. Outside the insurer's partner garages, new parts on a car over 3 years old are reduced by 10% to 45% (IPID and General Terms).

4 steps

How to buy car insurance online

  1. 01

    Request a free quote

Plate, first registration date, postcode, each driver's date of birth and licence date, the covers you want and any claims-history letter.

  2. 02

    Read the offer

The price, the IPID and the terms, before you pay.

  3. 03

    Pay online for 12 months

In full and directly to the insurer, by card, bank payment code, e-banking or ELTA. Cover starts on the start date.

  4. 04

    On the road

A third-party policy is issued in 5 to 10 minutes. Comprehensive cover that needs approval from the insurer's head office, for example for an expensive car or a less experienced driver, takes 1 to 2 hours. The car then shows as insured on hic.gr.

Documents: registration certificate, each driver's licence, ID or passport with ΑΦΜ, a valid ΚΤΕΟ certificate for cars over 4 years old.

  • Driving licence
  • ID and ΑΦΜ

Accidents

After an accident: report within 8 working days

Report every accident to the insurer within 8 working days. If both drivers agree who was at fault, sign the Amicable Statement (Φιλικός Διακανονισμός), the joint accident form, together at the scene; the driver not at fault is then paid by their own insurer when both insurers take part (Bank of Greece FAQ).

  • At-fault insurer inspects within 15 days, offers within 3 months

FAQ

Questions about car insurance in Greece

How much does car insurance cost in Greece?
It depends on the drivers' ages and licence years, the car's value and engine, the postcode, the covers and your claims record, so we publish no average. The free quote shows the price for your car; our guide to car insurance costs covers the wider market.
Is car insurance compulsory, and what is the minimum?
Yes. Every car with Greek plates needs third-party liability from the day it has plates, driven or not, unless it is declared off the road, at the minimums in the cover table above. Since 1 June 2025 the car must also be insured against forest fire and flood.
What is the fine for driving an uninsured car?
Electronic checks at least twice a year find uninsured cars. The fine is €500 for a car, €250 for a motorbike and €1,000 for a bus or truck (Law 5113/2024). If the car is still uninsured at a second check 3 months later, its registration and plates are removed.
How can I check if a car is insured?
Enter the plate number on the Hellenic Information Centre check, run by the Auxiliary Fund; it shows the insurer.
How quickly is the policy issued?
A third-party policy is usually issued in 5 to 10 minutes after you pay. Comprehensive cover takes 1 to 2 hours when the insurer's head office has to approve it, for example for an expensive car or a less experienced driver.
Can I drive abroad? Do I need a Green Card?
Third-party cover applies in the EU, the UK and the other Green Card countries when you carry a Green Card; ask us for one before you travel. Fire, theft, glass and own damage apply in Greece only and pause while the car is abroad.
Can I insure a car with foreign plates?
No. This policy covers Greek-plated cars only, and no Green Card can be issued for a foreign-registered car. Register it on Greek plates first; see moving a car to Greek plates.
Can I be insured on a UK or other non-EU licence?
An EU licence is valid as it is (Your Europe). A licence from a non-EU country that signed the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic stays valid until you become resident; then you need a Greek licence, and some countries can exchange theirs without a test (gov.gr). A licence from outside that convention needs an International Driving Permit with it. UK licence holders who live in Greece may use theirs for up to 6 months (GOV.UK). The insurer accepts licences and claims-free certificates from countries such as Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Israel, as long as the licence is valid for driving in Greece. If your licence is not valid in Greece at the time of an accident, the policy does not pay.
I am under 25 or a new driver. Can I get cover?
Yes, for third-party, fire, theft, glass and assistance, but not own damage while you are under 25 or licensed under 2 years. Declare every young driver: an undeclared one means third-party claims are paid only after a 60% penalty and your own car at 50%. More in cover for new drivers.
Can I pay monthly or in instalments?
No. Policies through us run 12 months and are paid in full before cover starts, by card, bank payment code, e-banking or ELTA. We do not sell 1, 3 or 6-month policies.
Does my no-claims record count, including one from abroad?
Yes. We take your claims-free history with another insurer, in Greece or another country, into account in the quote; bring that insurer's claims-history letter. Greek law sets no fixed switching discount, so we promise no percentage.
Can I cancel, and what if I sell the car?
You can cancel at any time in writing or by e-mail and get back the unused premium, pro rata. If you sell the car, the policy ends 30 days after the transfer.
Is it better to buy online, through a local agent or at a bank?
The insurer's terms are the same. Online with us you see the named insurer, the IPID and the terms before paying, you pay the premium directly to the insurer, and the insurer pays our commission. A local agent often works with one or a few insurers; a bank offers its partner insurer.
