4 steps

How to buy health insurance online

  1. 01

    Calculate quote

Choose the plan, area and deductible, and give the age of everyone to be insured.

  2. 02

    Answer the health questions

A full medical questionnaire, a moratorium form (six screening questions instead of the full list), or a switch that keeps your current policy's exclusions (up to age 65). The insurer accepts, adds exclusions or declines.

  3. 03

    Accept and pay

The insurer confirms in writing; pay yearly, or monthly by SEPA direct debit.

  4. 04

    Certificate by e-mail

Cover starts on the date shown; waiting periods run from that date. Get written pre-authorisation from the 24/7 assistance line before hospital care or any bill likely to exceed €3,000; report claims within 90 days.

Documents: ID or passport, proof of address, medical reports for any “yes” answer, an IBAN.

FAQ

Questions about health insurance in Greece

How much does private health insurance cost in Greece?
It depends on age, plan, deductible and area of cover. Each family member pays their own price, so enter everyone's date of birth in the calculator above for a family quote. Our guide to private health insurance costs compares the wider market.
I have ΕΟΠΥΥ. Why pay for private cover?
ΕΟΠΥΥ stays your base cover; the plan adds private hospitals, cover abroad and cash when a public hospital treats you free. Our ΕΟΠΥΥ vs private health insurance guide sets out the difference.
Can I get health insurance after 60 or 70?
Yes, if you are under 80 when the first policy starts. The price rises with age. Switching insurer with your current exclusions carried over (CPME) is open up to 65.
Are pre-existing conditions covered?
Only if you declare them and the insurer accepts them in writing. A pre-existing condition is anything you had symptoms, advice or treatment for in the 24 months before the start, plus any illness that shows in the first 30 days.
When can I use maternity cover?
For a birth at least 12 months after the policy starts: up to €1,000 on Core, €3,000 on Classic and €5,000 on Prime. Basic has no maternity cover.
What is the deductible, and which should I choose?
It is the amount you pay each policy year before the insurer pays, from Nil to €6,500. On a covered €14,000 operation you pay €150, €1,700 or €6,500 depending on the deductible, if none of it is used yet that year and the stay was pre-authorised. Once the deductible is used up, later claims that year are paid without it. A higher deductible lowers the premium. Check-ups, dental and optical care are paid without it.
What happens if I don't get pre-authorisation?
For hospital-type care you pay 40% of the cost; the insurer may waive this in a genuine emergency. Evacuation and repatriation are not paid at all. Call the 24/7 assistance line, which has a Greek number, before treatment: it approves the care and coordinates the admission. Bills are paid at usual and customary rates, so confirm how the hospital will be paid before you are admitted.
Is it better to buy online, through a local agent or at a bank?
We are paid a commission by the insurer, not a fee by you. A bank offers its partner insurer's plans. Online with us you see the named insurer and its policy documents before paying, with 14 days to cancel.
Does it cover me abroad?
Yes, worldwide. On the option without the USA, US treatment is limited to 30 consecutive days for benefits that apply abroad.
Does the policy renew automatically, and can the price change?
Yes, it renews every 12 months. The insurer can change the premium or terms, or decline to renew, with at least 30 days' written notice.
Can I cancel?
Within 14 days of receiving the policy you get a full refund if you have made no claim. After that, you get a pro-rata refund if there has been no claim in the current policy year.
Is the EHIC enough if I live in Greece?
No. The EHIC covers state healthcare during a temporary stay in another EU or EEA country, Switzerland or the UK. Residents get public care by registering with ΕΦΚΑ and ΕΟΠΥΥ when they qualify, or with an S1 form.
