What the digital nomad permit requires, and what our plan pays

The digital nomad residence permit (type Ι.8) is the two-year permit you file for in Greece after your Ζ.1 visa, and its file needs a private health insurance policy (ΚΥΑ 95391/2024, Art. 10). The policy must meet three yearly minimums, each with a co-pay of no more than 20% (ΚΥΑ 133692/2024). A nomad or travel plan counts only if it states that it covers you while you live in Greece.

Prices are per person. With 3 or more people on one policy, each person pays €5 less: two adults aged 35 and one child pay €192 a year. They include Greek insurance premium tax. The price goes by your age on your last birthday and buys the plan version with €500 accidental-death cover.

Cover is underwritten by Arch Insurance (EU) DAC, an Irish insurer authorised to work in Greece under the EU freedom to provide services (Bank of Greece register of insurance undertakings).

Who needs it

Visa, permit, renewal: which insurance at which stage

Since 6 February 2026 you can no longer apply for the digital nomad permit after entering Greece visa-free or on a Schengen visa. You need the Ζ.1 national visa from a Greek consulate first (Ν. 5275/2026, Art. 13). Each stage asks for a different kind of cover.

    Get your Ζ.1 visa

The consulate asks for separate travel insurance for the visa period.

    Check and pay

Read the policy documents (IPID and policy terms) and pay. We e-mail the policy and the certificate once the insurer issues them.

Add the certificate to your permit application on ΟΠΣ «Μετανάστευση», with your lease or other proof of address.

For the quote you need your passport details, date of birth, address (in Greece, if you already have one) and the permit type. The insurer asks health questions.

Renewal

How do I stay covered for the whole two-year permit?

The first digital nomad permit is issued for two years (Ν. 5038/2023, Art. 68(4)) and the policy runs for 12 months, so renew it before it ends. At renewal the office checks that you were insured for the whole period of the expiring permit (ΚΥΑ 95391/2024, Art. 2(δ)). File the permit renewal within two months before it expires (Ν. 5275/2026, Art. 12).

FAQ

Questions about digital nomad visa health insurance

Is travel insurance enough for the Greek digital nomad visa?
For the Ζ.1 visa, yes: the consulate asks for travel insurance for the visa period that covers medical repatriation and emergency care. For the Ι.8 permit you then need a private health policy that meets ΚΥΑ 133692/2024. So each stage needs its own kind of cover.
Do I need €30,000 of cover?
No. €30,000 is the minimum for Schengen short-stay visa insurance (Regulation (EC) 810/2009, Art. 15). The permit needs €10,000 hospital, €1,500 medical and €15,000 accident disability cover a year. The rules for the Ζ.1 visa set no amount.
Will my international nomad plan be accepted?
Many nomad plans cover temporary stays or charge a deductible per claim, which can make them unsuitable. A plan is accepted only if it states that it covers you while you live in Greece, meets the three minimums and carries no deductible or other special terms (ΚΥΑ 133692/2024, Art. 1). No Greek insurer is required. For wider cover than the permit minimum, see full private health cover.
Can I apply for the digital nomad permit from inside Greece?
Only once you hold the Ζ.1 visa. Since 6 February 2026, Ν. 5275/2026 has removed the option to apply after entering visa-free or on a Schengen visa. Get the Ζ.1 visa at a Greek consulate first, then file for the Ι.8 permit in Greece before the visa expires.
Can I buy the policy before I have a Greek address?
Yes. You can buy before you have an address in Greece. When you file for the permit, the file still needs a lease, a purchase deed or a use agreement.
When should the policy start?
You can choose a future start date, no later than the day you file the permit application, and the policy must stay active while the application is pending. Accidents are covered from the start date; illness after 30 days.
Does each family member need a policy, and what does a family pay?
Yes. Each person files cover in their own name, and one contract can list several people. The price is per person by age: two adults aged 35 and one child pay €192 a year, because with 3 or more people on one policy each person pays €5 less.
Does it cover me when I travel outside Greece?
No, treatment in Greece only. Take separate travel cover for trips.
My permit lasts two years. Do I buy a two-year policy?
No. Buy 12 months and renew before it ends; a policy bought later cannot fill a past gap.
Do digital nomads get ΕΦΚΑ or public healthcare instead?
No. The digital nomad permit gives no Greek social insurance, which is why the permit file needs a private policy (ΚΥΑ 95391/2024, Art. 10).
What if my plans change, or I want to cancel?
You can withdraw within 14 days of receiving the policy and get your premium back. After that you can cancel at any time in writing and get back the unused premium minus a fee of 10% or €50, whichever is higher, and nothing if you made a claim. A refused visa or permit does not give a separate refund; these terms apply.
Can I buy through a local agent or my bank instead?
Yes. A tied agent offers one insurer or a few, a broker several, and a bank its partner insurer. With us you buy online, the insurer pays our commission, and you see the policy documents before you pay.
