Catamaran insurance in Greece

DigiCare Insurance arranges hull, machinery and third-party liability cover for privately used sailing and power catamarans in Greek waters, Greek or foreign flag, on the same policy as our yacht insurance. The catamaran is insured at the value you agree, with every engine listed, and you see the terms and the IPID before you pay.

  • 100% of the agreed value on a total loss: both hulls, rig and every engine
  • Salvage up to the hull sum, plus 80% of what you spend to save the boat, on top
  • Third-party liability with legal costs and wreck removal inside the limit

Your deductible is set in your Confirmation of Cover; damage from a named windstorm carries a deductible of 10% of the hull value.

Law 4926/2022, Art. 17

What the law requires and what we cover on a catamaran

Catamaran insurance in Greece is compulsory third-party liability for any catamaran over 7 m, plus optional agreed-value cover for both hulls, engines and rig. A catamaran over 7 m is a pleasure craft under Greek law, whether it sails or motors, so it must carry third-party liability insurance while sailing, moored or at anchor (Law 4926/2022, Art. 17). The minimum pays people on board and third parties. It pays nothing towards your own catamaran; hull cover is your choice.

What sets the price of your catamaran cover

There is no fixed price. The underwriter rates each catamaran on its own details, starting from its agreed value rather than its length. The quote is free and commits you to nothing.

FAQ

Questions about catamaran insurance in Greece

Is catamaran insurance compulsory in Greece?
Yes, for any catamaran over 7 m, sail or power: it is a pleasure craft and needs third-party liability cover at the minimums of Law 4926/2022, Art. 17, in force since 1 June 2022. A catamaran classed as a speedboat needs it at any length (Art. 74). The old rule of Law 4256/2014 no longer applies. Hull cover is your choice; for other boats see yacht insurance.
Do you insure catamarans in a charter fleet or under a management contract?
No. We insure privately used catamarans only: no bareboat, skippered or crewed charter, and no charter-management programmes. A private-status yacht of any flag may not be chartered or used for paid trips in Greece anyway (Law 4926/2022, Art. 3(6)(δ)). If your catamaran leaves a fleet for private use, we can quote it from the date private use starts.
Is a catamaran insured on its length or its value?
On its value. The policy is agreed-value: you and the underwriter fix what the boat is worth at the start, that sum is paid on a total loss, and the percentage deductible is taken from it. Include equipment, every engine and the tender when you set it.
Are both engines covered?
Yes. The insured vessel includes her machinery, sails, mast, rigging and equipment, and the questionnaire lists each engine with its power, fuel, year and value. Accidental damage is covered; wear and tear, gradual deterioration, electrolysis and latent defects are not.
How much does catamaran insurance cost in Greece?
Catamaran insurance in Greece has no fixed price: the underwriter rates each boat on its agreed value, engines, mooring and lay-up, cruising area, skippers, claims history and the deductible, so we publish no average. Cover runs 12 months and is paid by bank transfer; the free quote shows the price for your catamaran.
Do you insure trimarans and other multihulls?
Catamarans, yes; the questionnaire asks for the hull type. Trimarans are not insured under this policy.
Who may skipper the catamaran? Do I need a sailing CV?
Only the operators named and approved on your policy. The underwriter may ask for each skipper's licence, experience on comparable boats and claims record before cover starts. Single-handed sailing is covered only if the underwriter approves it.
Are storms, meltemi and medicanes covered?
Storm damage is covered as accidental damage and takes your normal hull deductible. Damage from a named or numbered windstorm carries a deductible of 10% of the hull value and needs a storm plan agreed with the underwriter before windstorm cover applies.
Do I need a survey?
Only if the underwriter asks, which is common for older and ex-charter catamarans. The survey must reach the underwriter within 45 days of the start date and its recommendations must be carried out within 30 days; otherwise the policy is void from the start. Photos of the boat are often asked within 14 days.
Can I insure a new catamaran before handover or for the delivery voyage?
Ask in the quote form and give the boat's location and route. The underwriter decides each case; cover starts on the date in your Confirmation of Cover and applies only inside the navigational limits it sets.
Can I live aboard my catamaran?
Tell us in the questionnaire, which asks about year-round liveaboard. If your policy has a lay-up period, the boat may not be used or lived on during it.
Is it better to buy online, through a local agent or a marina broker?
Online with us you get the terms and the IPID before paying, and London Marine handles claims for the Lloyd's underwriters; the insurer pays our commission. A local tied agent sells the Greek insurers it represents. A broker compares several insurers for you under a written mandate and may charge a fee.
Important information

Cover is underwritten by Lloyd's underwriters and arranged by London Marine Insurance Services. Terms, exclusions and limits are in the policy documents (IPID and policy wording) provided in English before purchase. We insure privately used catamarans only; catamarans in charter are not covered.

The policy is governed by English law; disputes go to arbitration in London.

Greek law requires third-party liability insurance for pleasure craft over 7 m, including catamarans, and for all speedboats (Law 4926/2022, Art. 17 and 74). Keep your insurance certificate on board.
